Sunday:  out and about

Friday and Saturday we're both away for the long weekend.  I'm camping so I'm surviving on pre packaged indian food, single servings of tuna, crackers, and fruit.  probably lots of junk food too.

on rain, sand and love

it's 7 am.  I just bounced around the apartment yelling "rain day ya!"  and then posted that as my FB status.  There is thunder and lightning.  It's glorious.  It's been too long.  Well, other than Saturday when we got rained off the island.  That was fun too.  I was at a vow renewal ceremony.  The fun part about the rain was that no one was leaving because we where there for Kitty and Chico.

Hold on, I have to open up the windows!!  we need the fresh air.
ok, all opened up, fans going.

Right, Rain, and Love.

I get excited about rain days because I don't (generally) have to work.  And although money is tight, my work is tiring, and money isn't the end all be all.  (try to tell that to my worry wart husband, but I have Trust and Faith that things work out even in the end)  I'm also becoming disenchanted from my job/boss.  Maybe that's a story for another day.  Regardless, the rain is very much welcome.  We've had a dry spell and plants are wilting.

and now, speaking of rain.  On to sand, and where it comes into this post.  On Saturday We went to the Island for a vow renewal! YA!

Kitty and Chico loose their heads

They brought the same rain they had on their first wedding day.  Double good luck?  It was wonderful to gather on the beach, with friends to celebrate, as, 1. they got married in Seattle the first time, and 2. Kitty didn't know (most of) us back then!  I've known Chico for...8 or 9 years, longer than I've known J.  And the transformation this relationship has made on him is sublime.  He glows now.  The pair of them together.  WOW, just WOW, as Chico would say.
Being on the (wet) beach brings home sand.  Getting caught in a down pour doesn't wash it off, it kinda makes it stick more!  Maybe that's what happens to Love.  Maybe that's why it's lucky when it rains on your wedding day.  It makes it stick more.  It rained on our wedding day too.

workshop Wednesday

I don't work Wednesdays.   I *do* have appointments to go to, but I also have a little more free time.  So I thought I'd share things!  Here is my Sushi workshop!  I made California Rolls.

You will need:

Nori sheets.
Sushi rice (small fat rice)
Rice wine vinegar
Sugar
a large NON metal bowl or plate
avocado sliced into strips
cucumber sliced into strips
fake crab leg sliced into smaller strips
sesame seeds
rolling mat
bowl of water
*sharp* knife

Here is a recipe on how to cook rice for sushi.

here is my rice...on a metal tray...um, don't do like me.

Put a sheet of nori on your rolling mat.  Dip your fingers into the bowl of water and scoop up some rice.  pat it gently onto your nori sheet, leaving about an inch at the top for sealing the roll.

Sprinkle sesame seeds over rice.

Place strips of cucumber, avocado and crab at the oposit side of the bare strip of nori.

fold the bottom of the mat and roll over.  Gently squeeze as you roll (with both hands...I needed a hand to take the photo!)  Make sur you don't roll the mat with the sushi!

This takes a little practice, and your rolls might look a little wonky...but keep going...it'll be fine!

Wet the bare edge of your roll and glue.  I place it seam edge down to help it stick while I roll more.

Using a super sharp knife, Cut the roll into 6 pieces.   Rinse the knife in water after every cut or it will be a sticky mess.

Dip in light soy sauce with wasabi!

oh, my Life...

I haven't been talking much about my daily living much these days.

One amazing thing that happened was the the Postal strike ended and J got his results from his nursing registration exam.  He passed!  He'll be looking for a job as soon as he pays for the registration.  I'm married to an RPN!
I LOVE the juxtaposition of our careers.  Here I go off to work in big steel toed boots, and use shovels, lift stone, get mega dirty, cut lawns and generally sweat a lot.  And J, wears scrubs and 'nursing shoes' and is a nurse.*  Its a bit of a role reversal.  It's great, and I can't wait for our kids to tell everyone what we do and for some adult to say, "oh sweetie, don't you mean you Mummy is a nurse and your Daddy is a Landscaper?"  tee hee.

I've been to a wedding last week.  and next weekend is a vow renewal.  And in 2 weeks is a weekend event called Moose Man.   It's put on by members of the Burning Man community in Toronto.  I don't consider myself a 'burner' so much.  I have no desire to *go* to Burning Man.  But the antics we get up to on the weekend is sublimely fun.  I'm the 'lead' for the performances.  So I get to organize the Moose Man Cabaret, and the Pre Burn show.  here are the photos from last year!  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150245290090298.479165.691120297

Today I'm going to Peterborough with My mom and her husband to celebrate my sister and her Girlfriends engagement.  YAY.  I better get going actually!

I see!!

it's been a while.  I've still been seeing though!  when ever I see something note worthy, I say in my head "I saw..."

I'm going to switch it up now!  I keep saying "I smell..."  I feel..."  and for a little bit, I'd stop myself and think"I SEE I SEE"  and then one day I thought "oh...wait...I can do anything I want!"  so now I'm doing all 5 senses!

Today
I saw:
a wee iridescent fly
people letting go
sparkly circles
a boy discovering

I felt:
hot sun
cool breeze
the hoop move
my body open

I heard:

I smelled:

the week in food

Sunday-Scalloped potatoes and Lentil patties from last week!  I didn't get a chance!
Monday-spagetti, with spinach, zuccini and sausage, pesto or red??
Tuesday-I might be at a meeting/BBQ...
Wednesday-homemade pizza!  OMNOMNOM  we tend to take an idea and run with it for a while.
Thursday-Bangers and mash (mashed potatoes mixed with spinach, sausage, and this time, garlic scapes.
Friday-Saturday- I'm home alone...I'll make something that will last for a few days...J is gone to GrandpaW's with Pickle from Friday-Tuesday!  sheesh.

On another topic...J has a complicated family.  GW is his *birth* dad.  Pa is his adoptive dad. GrandmaD is his birth mom and Ma is his adoptive mom AND biological grandmother.  GD was really young when her and GW got into some shenanigans.  Ma is GD's mother.  So Ma and Pa adopted J.  Pa is Ma's second marriage, so he's not biologically related to anyone.  To top is off, Ma had a baby *after* GD and her sister AuntD who she gave to her mom.  WOAH. Oh AND GW has another son who is Pickles age.  So Pickle hangs out with his 'Uncle'.

What is your family like?  is it a nuclear family or rather shuffled around?

seeing and living

I changed the name of my blog.  I didn't like having the word 'bitches' there anymore.  I felt it was a little too negative.  I LOVE having Stitches and bitches with my friends...but I don't want 'bitching' to be a daily part of my life.
I want this blog to be about my life, and how I live.  I'm trying to live bitch free.

this includes being Mindful!  I was pretty good today.
I was mindful that I was whinging about my boss to my co-workers...That's a first step I suppose...realizing you are doing it.  next step I think is not saying it.  I'd also like to be compassionate towards him.  Not judgmental.

Being mindful for me is getting out of my head, and knowing what is going on.  that's where "seeing" come in!

Today I saw:

Butterflys
A bright, shiny blue beetle
a turret
a cloudless blue sky
the wind blowing the trees
a cute boy
a boy having fun driving the bob cat
an indifferent cat

what are we having?

that's what J asks every day in regards to dinner!  I need to direct him to this blog ha ha.

Sunday: pizza (Pickle is here until Monday, so I bought store bought pizza because all he has on it is cheese...it's cheaper to buy one!)
Monday:  pork stirfry
Tuesday: Jmade ravioli!
Wedneday: pizza!  this time homemade with zucchini, tomatos, mushrooms and basil
Thursday:chips and dips
Friday: scallop potatoes, and pumpkin seed crusted lentil patties from Vive le Vegan
Saturday:  we're attending a wedding!

So far J has been really please with the vegan recipes.  I was worried because he "needs meat" and shys away from vegetarian/vegan food.  Last weeks Chickpea puree was a bit of a bust though.  too heavy for pasta.  we might make it as a dip one of these days.  it was tasty!
