I'm getting ready to make a change in my diet again.
I've recently figured out a few things, and they need to get better. I hope food can be my medicine.
1. I can remineralize my teeth. I cannot afford a dentist, but I can afford to make my own tooth paste, take specific supplements and eat the proper foods. I know I have cavities, and I've read a few articles/blog posts saying they can be healed (x-rays-cavities, remineralize, 6 months later, no cavities) That sounds so woowoo writing it down! But I just can't afford to get drilled!
2. My hormones are messed. I knew this before getting pregnant. I guess they where on track enough TOO get pregnant, so that's good. But I've started feeling yucky again. Anxiety, PMS, mood swings. No period yet, but it's coming.
3. My platelets are low again. Not dangerous, but I'm bruising. Pregnancy stabilized them. ITP is an auto immune disorder. I need to think about an autoimmune diet.
4. IBS! that too was settled while pregnant. I'm cheesed that all the good stuff just didn't stay. Anti inflammatory feeds please.
5. I just feel cruddy. Fatigued, foggy brain, sore joints.
The first thing I'm going to look at is autoimmune diet. It's been a long time since my body has been attacking itself. I found an online seminar that is actually geared towards weight loss for women, but the description spoke about auto immune, anti inflammatory stuff so I thought I'd check it out. I have some good resources from them. It's mostly paleo. I've done 'the paleo diet' before for about a month. it's HARD, but I did feel pretty great. I'll need J's help so I can do a lot more food prep.
I'm planning on starting with no gluten (I should be staying away from wheat anyway as it bothers me), no added sugar and no cow dairy. For this part of the transition I'm going to allow myself goat cheese and yogurt.
Soon I'd like to start full paleo for breakfast and lunch, and 'just' good healthy whole foods for dinner.
I'm also not sure I should be going full out paleo/autoimmune while I'm still breastfeeding Bunny almost full time. He's still getting 90% of his nutrition from me, and I don't want to detox too hard while that's happening. I think that even if the toxins don't go into my breast milk, it will be hard on me to do that filtering.
So, baby steps.
I need to make some sort of chart and see if all these special diets even can work together!
But I think for now, no gluten, no added sugar, low dairy, way more vegetables will help.

get stuffed! (SQUASH!)
My new favourite meal is stuffed squash.
Sometime last year I had a hankering for stuffing. I can't remember if I had come across a stuffed squash recipe first, or if I thought I was a genius, and then found out I wasn't the first.
J happens to think I make the best stuffing evar. He's not a huge squash fan, but he raves about this!
Ingredients:
- 1 medium squash. I used acorn, but delicata (aka sweet potato ) pepper or other squash with a good empty middle will work. Even butternut would be fine, but you'd get a whole lot more squash.
- 2 raw sausages. Any flavour you like. When I make stuffing for a bird I like to use a milder flavour, but this time I used hot Italian.
- 1 apple or firm pear, cored and cubed (1 cm-ish)
- one small onion, or one leek, or a large shallot diced
- 1/4 cup pecan or walnut pieces. Maybe even hazelnuts would work.
- 1 cup cooked rice OR 1 cup cubed bread
- stock or water if using bread and mix is dry
Method:
- Preheat oven to 350oF
- Cut squash in half
- Scoop out seeds, set aside if you want to keep them to grow or eat.
- Take casing off sausage and plop into mixing bowl
- Add in apple/pear, onion, nuts, rice/bread and smoosh with hands.
- If using bread and mixture is crumbly and not holding together add in some stock slowly until it forms a nice lump
- Divide stuffing into 2 lumps and stuff the squash.
- Put squash in roasting pan (stuffing up), add an inch of water to bottom of tray, put lid on, or tin foil if the lid doesn't fit, or you don't have a 'proper' roasting pan.
- Bake for um...I didn't check. (again). Set your timer for a half hour. Check the squash for doneness. I found once the squash was cooked though, the sausage was also cooked.
We eat a half squash as a meal, but you could serve quarters or 8ths with other things too.

getting organized
I recently read a blog post about tips on time management.
I made a 28 dinner menu plan. 4 weeks of dinners!
I've tried this before, so I hope I can stick to it.
Here is my plan:
M- Stuffed Squash
T- Chips and dips
W- Sushi
T- Meat (whatever is on sale) and veg (whatever is in season)
F- Spaghetti
S- Chili
S- Fish
M- East Indian pouches
T- Zucchini lasagna
W- Fried rice
T- Shepherds pie
F- Shrimp pesto
S- Soup/stew
S- Risotto
M- Pot pie
T- Burgers
W- Meat (whatever is on sale) and veg (whatever is in season)
T- Quinoa casserole
F- Bangers and mash
S- Whole chicken with quinoa and veg.
S- Macauli and cheese
M- Wraps
T- Pizza
W- Tacos
T- Alfredo (shrimp/chicken)
F- Chicken wings
S- Curry
S- Meat (whatever is on sale) and veg (whatever is in season)
I tried to arrange it so I'm able to us similar ingredients a few days apart. Like the spaghetti, chili and lasagna, or I'll be making rice for the Indian pouches, and then making fried rice (which is better with cold rice anyway!), or I make curry and mac and cheese with cauliflower. I also arranged it so we didn't have a week full of beef, or pasta. We have at least one vegetarian meal a week.
And don't worry, when I say 'chicken wings' or 'fish' there will be a veggie or salad to go with it.
I'll eat leftovers for lunch.
I also like tips numbers:
1. If you’re going to waste time, do it at the end of the day rather than the beginning.
3. Have daily planning sheets and fill them out the night before
8. Purge items from your home at least every three months
As well as the tip:
Organize your day:
1st: essential
2nd: necessary
3rd: nice to do
Some of the other tips we won't do. We don't have the space for a million rolls of TP or garbage bags. We don't give gifts or cards much, and when we do, they are hand made, or very specific. We have a stupid tiny fridge so I can't make a lot to freeze.
I'm going to go buy some white boards for the menu and daily list.
Lets see if this time I can get on top of it!

milestone week!!
We've had a jam packed week!
Lionel turned 6 months, and all of a sudden he: can sit up on his own, roll over (front to back) and has a tooth!!
Teething hasn't been too bad. We have an amber teething necklace that he's had on since 2 months. We use Hylands teething gel, and Boiorn homeopathic Camilla when he gets fussy. We've had some wakeful nights. But all in all Bunny is a pretty happy dude!!
We tried him on solid food on my birthday, and since, but his gag reflex is very ... good? He gags so hard he throws up, so we're holding off for now. I bought some rice cereal, fortified with iron (and other stuff) that I'll mix with breast milk. At 6 months babies iron stores start to get used up, so we need to get some from the outside. I'm not concerned yet, but he does need to learn how to eat eventually. Rice is supposed to be the easiest to digest.
I had grand plans of not feeding cereal, and doing 'baby lead weaning/feeding'. Basically you allow your baby to feed themselves, super soft foods first. This allows them to go at their own pace, touch and enjoy on their own. We'll get there.
*edit*
feeling in Bunny's mouth it feels like tooth #2 is well on it's way. Today Lionel is being clingy, and is wanting to nurse and rest with me.

sugar "free"
With some prompting from other moms in my on line mommy group, I've decided that May is going to be sugar "free".
I've put quotes around free because I'm still eating fruit. Dried, juiced, blended or whole. I think I'm also going to bake with some honey and agave for an occasional treat.
I guess what I'm really doing is eating whole foods. Nothing from a package, and I'm not going to add refined sugar to *anything*. I'm also not going to add honey (or other) to my coffee, cereal/granola or toast. I'm also going to stay away from stivia, and artificial sweeteners as I'm not concerning myself with calories. I'm concerning myself with eating more healthfully than I have been.
I've made a 'sugar free' board on Pinterest for possible sweets to make.
I need to make sure I've got a daily plan. I'm pulling this out of ...um, accumulated stuff I've read. And I'm fully aware I've tried stuff like this before!!
It's got to be loose and easy with LeoB around.
Lets see what a day might look like:
wake up - oil pull, and prep warm water and lemon/lime.
first breakfast - granola and yogurt
second breakfast - smoothie
elevensies - carrot and hummus/celery and peanut butter/apple and cheese
lunch - sandwich and bone broth
snack -baked good
dinner - extra veg.
snack - pop corn...?
I have to drink my 1685 ml jug of water!
lets see if I can stay on track!

food!
Trying to be more organized with dinners...
I was in a rut, then I remembered all the stuff I pin onto pinterest!!
My breakfasts will be granola, sort of following that recipe, and yogurt.
Lunches will be leftovers or soup, or sandwiches.
Snacks: smoothies, kimchi, carrots, hommade gummies? I'm going to make my own sauerkraut!
I'm making my own almond milk too. Sound ambitious, but it's really easy.
What we will eat:
Friday: Quinoa chicken chili
Saturday: bbqed sausage at P+P's b-day party
Sunday: leftover chili
Monday: Chips and dips - Baked hummus and spinach dip, guacamole, fresh bean 'salsa'
Tuesday: meat of some sort, Cilantro lime quinoa
Wednesday: quinoa, avocado chickpea salad (using the quinoa from Tuesday, cooked chickpeas and guacamole from Monday!)
Thursday: Shrimp alfredo
Friday: Easter weekend...we will be fed

half a dozen
I've started half a dozen posts this week!
I think the problem is that I've got a lot going on in my head!
a list if you will:
-The impending Starbucks promotion.
I hate that this is taking up so much of my brain power. Being conniving is not in my nature. It also saddens me that I need to be conniving for a job I'm practically already doing. And one that is only $1 an hour more than I'm making now.
- I submitted a 15 minute turn to Toronto Festival of Clowns and got accepted!
Now I have 5 weeks to perfect this turn. I feel ill (in a good way!) every time I think about it.
- My new way of eating
No sugar is way hard! Making sure I have food to eat so I don't eat junk is hard. I just have to keep on keeping on, because I DO feel better.
- Baby making
Still going at it. (ha ha)
- Getting to the gym
I need to get fit! No sugar help keep me slim, but I am SO out of shape. Tai chi and weight lifting are in order. Working almost 40 hours a week makes it hard.
- Performances other than Festival of Clowns
I have 2 other performances coming up for Lunacy Cabaret too!! I've done both before, so it's just a matter of rehearsing a couple times.
I'm not sure, other than going day to day, what will make this next month easier.
I'm not feeling too over whelmed. But I find myself split. I'll start one thing, and jump to another.
Focus. I need to focus. Good food will help with that.

One week (plus) - no sugar
It's been 11 days!
I had two oopses. I put ketchup on my fries. At least it was organic? And the sandwich meat had sugar in it. Damn hidden sugar!
oh, and I licked a bit of caramel. Just for the taste. Two licks and I threw it out.
Day 3 was the hardest. I guess it was when my body started to clue in.
*TMI WARNING*
I was also *very* bloated and gassy. It was foul. I chalk that up to the death of yeast. Apparently if the yeast dies too fast the toxins can actually harm you. I'm glad I'm taking it slow, and not doing the full on candida diet. The candida diet is no sugar at all, not even fruit sugar. And certain vegetables are off the list too, things like carrots and sweet potatoes.
I have just started menstruating, and I had a pretty big chocolate craving yesterday. To celebrate my one week I allowed myself a feather of chocolate, made with agave.
The biggest problem I have encountered this week was a pretty big IBS flareup. I actually left work early, and left them in the lurch.
The saddest part for me is that I really haven't felt any better. I'm going to keep going though. What I've read says that yeast die off makes things worse.
I've been reading Megan Telpner's UnDiet. A lot of it I know. Very basically, eat whole foods, stay away from sugar, alcohol and caffeine. She goes into what a calorie is, and why we should ignore them. We need to drink more, and almost only water.
She goes into cravings, and habit changing.
All in all I'm inspired to keep making changes to my lifestyle. Because she doesn't just talk about diet. This has to be my new life.

sugar free - day one
I did it! I didn't eat sugar today!
oy.
I'm including any sweetener, including maple syrup and honey.
I need to make strategies to keep it up though.
I need ready snacks, and drinks for at work. For now I'm going to include things with fruit. I can weed them out once I get hard core.
I'm also sticking to whole foods. No chips, processed or other junk food either.
Celery and nut butter
Nori
Dried fruit
Nuts and seeds
yogourt and fruit
Banana bread made with dates/apple sauce rather than sugar
beef jerky, home made
kim chi
crackers, home made
Veggies, veggies and more veggies and dip - guacamole! Hummus!
I've got 2 days off, and I'll try to get as much of this prepped.
I've got to think about drinks too. I can have tea! I'd like to stay away from coffee too. We have hot tea and cold tea. For now I can drink apple juice if I'm feeling like I want something sweet. I can also have the smoothies for now, as well as the juice we add to it.
I just need to create new habits.
I can do this, and be healthy.

boooooobs (uh, tmi if you don't want to hear about my 'cycle')
yes, that's right. Boobs.
Lately I have had the unfortunateness (shut up spell check, it is SO a word) of sore breasts during the last 2 weeks of my menstrual cycle.
One of the annoying PMS symptoms that is *also* a pregnancy symptom.
I thought last month was bad.
Sheesh.
This month I can't do anything with out my boobs hurting. Wearing a bra, not wearing a bra. Sports bra, underwire, no wire. No dice. Walking, running, standing, laying down; on my back or side or front. I am walking around moaning "booooooooooobs"
Picture if you will; I am wearing a turquoise pashmina tied around my chest. Why? maybe the colour helps...
I googled "breast soreness remedies"
I need to:
eat flax
take calcium and magnesium
take evening primrose oil
Put cabbage leaves on my breasts
cold compress
hot compress
and take asprin, or tylonal.
I also decided to ask Facebook.
My friends decided I have candida.
So I googled *that*.
All the tests and quizzes I did say I more than likely have candida.
I looked at all the candida diets.
*sadface*
I'm going to quit refined sugar right now.
After I get my period I will start hard core. That will be the 17th or so.
I'm putting it off because we *are* trying to get pregnant, and I don't want to go too drastic if I happen to be.
That means:
no sugar. Only stivia to sweeten *gag*.
no fruit. smoothies! *sob*
no caffeine. "oh, no starbucks patron, I don't drink anything in the store."
no alcohol (meh)
no gluten (what eves)
no legumes
no starchy veg
no yeast
no cheese, milk
For now. no sugar no gluten, and more flax and cabbage.
On the plus side, I can eat fermented veg...
I can make kim chi, and sauerkraut and yogourt.
Does ceasar dressing count??
On another note. I *have* been feeling rather yucky lately. I also think I have something wrong with my gallbladder. Odd pain in my lower right rib area. I'm making an appointment with my doctor to get checked out, and I'll mention this candida thing.

Smoothie majik
My friend Kate often posts about the smoothies and other delectable healthy food she makes. One day she she said she put cilantro in her smoothie. I was inspired.
I made a peach cilantro smoothie, and then next day, a peach, strawberry smoothie.
Plug in your blender.
Plop in
a banana
6 strawberries, leaves and all. The leaves apparently are full of vitamins too.
6 slices (or one whole, minus the pit) peach
1/2 cup of yogourt
2 tbsp OJ concentrate
a large handful of washes cilantro
Pour coconut water half way up
full the rest of the way up, to just under where the other ingredients stop, with water
Blend! (oh, put the lid on first)
This made about 1 litre of smoothie.
I was in smoothie heaven. I kept saying "mmmmm" out loud.

feelin' buggy
I'm feeling down right buggy today. Maybe I mean wiggy. Jittery or just plain weird.
I was going to post about how well I've been doing food wise. About 2 weeks of no gluten. Some grains, rice and buckwheat. Very very little sugar. Just some lemonade and chai latte, and a bite or two when Jason gets a choky bar. Subing in raw honey and maple syrup.
I felt happy, and people noticed. No one was so bold as to tell me out right, but people interacted with me differently. It was great. I even *liked* people. That was huge. I didn't think people where likeable.
Then I ate a breakfast meal at Mc Donalds, and 2 pieces of cinnamon loaf from work.
Grump city. Headache and fatigue.
I will never do that again.
I have to be SO on top of my eating. I need to make my chia pudding and chocolate slop (I have no idea how she got it so stiff! she says she didn't use beaters!) and set aside time to bake. I can put bot of those in mason jars!
I challenge you today. No more gluten! and cut back on sugar. I bet you'll feel the wold of difference!

"hunger month" soup, or apple cider squash soup
HEH? Hunger month? The Green Pigeon explains, and has some good suggestions on how to survive better next year.
I literally just read that post. Right after I had finished eating my own bowl of my soup. I had been thinking today that it would be a perfect recipe for this time of year.
Indeed.
Ingredients:
1 squash, peeled, seeded, and cubed
3 small, 2 medium or 1 large sweet potato, peeled and cubed
2 mall or 1 medium cooking onion, chopped
Enough stock (vegetable or chicken) to cover vegetables (that way you can use any sized squash)
1 tbsp fresh grated ginger
salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp ground, or 1 stick cinnamon
2-3 tbsp apple cider vinegar (unfiltered is best, and yummiest)
2 cups apple cider
1/2-1 cup coconut milk
-Tumble squash, sweet potato and onion into pot. Cover with stock.
-Bring to a boil, and turn heat down to simmer. Add cinnamon, ginger, salt and pepper, stir.
-Cook for 5 or whatever minutes. Before the squash is soft, toss in vinegar and cider. Turn down heat more. To just buppa buping (as my mommy would say)
-Stir on occasion, and turn off once squash is soft. Don't over cook. Take off stove and wiz up with a hand blender. Be so careful. Don't lift the hand blender and make it fly all over and burn yourself. If you don't have a hand blender, let cool some and blend in blender. Add in coconut milk and stir until blended.
-Ladle out and eat with bread and butter (I sorely miss white rye and butter with my soup!)

last week and this week
This weeks menu:
Monday was steak and salad
Tuesday: Squash soup
Wednesday: Fish and chips
Thursday: Pork roast with Broccoli
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be 'scrounging' J is away with Pickle, and when J is away I eat whatever! Leftovers, kitchen sink soup, chicken liver and beets.
And now for the stuff I caught in the 'net last week and didn't throw back:
Some people assume that because I like being on stage I'm an extrovert. I'm not. I call myself an introverted Leo. "look at me!" but don't talk to me. I'm busy, being alone.

oh, Hi Wednesday!
I meant to post our menu Sunday...
But it's easy enough.
Chili
/menu
I made a HUGE pot, so that's all we're eating.
Yummy lamb chili. Ground lamb was on sale, so that's what I got.
Cheep and cheerful.
Last week I saw some fun things on the internets that tickled me:
Some gender bending.

“I understand signifiers. We’re social creatures and we have a physical language of communicating with each other,” she says. “But it would be a really beautiful thing if we could all just wear what we wanted, without it meaning something.”
Awesome (celebrity) parenting. An aside, isn't Willow just the spitting image of Will? <3

this weeks menu
hey! look at what I'm planning on making this week. Maybe J will see this and not have to ask!!
(for some reason it *really* bugs me when J asks 'Whats for dinner?' not sure why...any ideas?)
Monday: Raosted pork loin and cauliflower with mushroom gravy and salad
Tuesday: Chicken curry
Wednesday: Chicken stew pie Except *this* time I'm going to use the mushroom gravy instead of canned soup
Thursday: Leftovers. My poor manager was at work for like 13 hours and was struggling to fill all the shifts Thursday, so I volunteered to close, so that means I'll be working 2 jobs that day.
Friday: More leftovers? I'm going to be rehearsing for Lunacy. I'm a Lunacy dancer!
I'm going to have to figure something out for the weekend. J is with Pickle for his birthday (and I'm a bad step-mom...I wasn't paying attention to the dates, so I won't be celebrating Pickles 15th!)
Interested in any of those recipes? All of it is home made!

ice cream and anniversaries
Tomorrow is J and my 6th year wedding anniversary.
I'm working both tomorrow and Monday night, so I thought I'd stay home and celebrate tonight.
The only downfall? J had to go to bed at 8pm! ha ha. His job as an occasional part time nurse means he gets stuck with some not great shifts, like the whole long weekend. These 3 days where planned in advance (I guess people where good and actually booked the time off). Unfortunately not everyone books the time off and calls in sick so Friday he got a last minute call to go in for the evening shift, 3-11pm. And the long weekend shifts, 7am-3pm. He got home last night and got 5 hours of sleep then worked. Poor guy. Money is a wee bit tight so he's feeling the pressure to take everything that is offered.
For our anniversary I made us ice cream. In the maker my cousin gave us for a wedding present no less!
I made coconut almond chocolate chip. PALEO ICE CREAM!
I modified The Unrefined Kitchens vanilla ice cream recipe with canned coconut milk, home made chocolate chips and almonds.
my modified vanilla ice cream:
1 can coconut milk (not milk-like coconut beverage!!!)
3-4 tbsp honey (agave would work too I'm sure...use less)
1 tbsp vanilla
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup slivered and blanched almonds (or finely chopped raw almonds would be even better!!)
-whip up coconut milk, honey and vanilla
-chill until...chilled
-pop into ice cream maker (following their instructions)
-put in chocolate chips and almonds when ice cream is soft serve consistancy
-eat when you can't handle waiting any more!
serves 2-3 (or more if you are topping another dessert)
I really liked the home made chocolate chips. They are chewy and not all crumbly when frozen.
I also really liked that it can be so much less inexpensive than store bought! a pint of store bought coconut ice cream is like $8. This was SO good and cost maybe $2 to make. I'd guess half the price for a whole pint...maybe.

food and family
Today we had a party for my mom (she recently turned 60! oh...sorry mom, although you have been saying that 60 is the new 40...) and for Owen. It's really nice seeing my family more that 3 times a year!! This is the first time I've been around a baby since the miscarriage, and I was SO fine. I got to hold him for a bit. he's such a sweetie. I didn't bring my camera, but I'm sure his grandpa will be posting photos soon!
I brought Miracle Pie and was glad everyone enjoyed it! It's my new favourite treat. Raw cashew cream pie.
Filling
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 cup raw cashew
sweetened to taste with agave syrup
add cocoa powder for chocolate and vanilla for...vanilla
Blend/food process until smooth
Crust
1 cup walnits
1 cup dates
blended to a constancy you like
pat down crust into pie plate (I used flat soup bowls!)
pour/glop filling in
refrigerate.
My friend Pwylla also added a layer of blueberries on the bottom and raspberries on the top, I used mango instead of rasp.
I told my Uncle Art (aka Owen's grandpa) that it is vegan, gluten and sugar free. He made a face, and I forced him to eat it anyway. He told me it was good! next time I only tell the people who need to know that it's 'healthy'.
Next party is up in Peterborough at Mommy's and Cousin Sean's new house. (separate houses!)
Sean has a pool. huzzah!!

just a quick note on the best smothie evar.
Strawberry almond smoothie:
(I use a magic bullet...)
half a large banana
2 more fresh Ontario strawberries than you think you need (ie. put some in, then add 2 more)
2 glops of almond butter
the same amount of yoghurt
tblsp. coconut oil
top with orange juice.
I thought of adding the last of my spinach. Next time.
Also, although I am a huge fan of making my own almond butter, when it is cheaper by the Lb. than buying almonds...um...buy the almond butter!! (Chunkey was almost half the price as smooth! WHA???)
